Acupuncture and depression – an effective supportive therapy

Depression is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the most common causes of workplace disability. The most frequently used treatment methods include antidepressants and psychotherapy. Unfortunately, for some patients, pharmacotherapy does not bring the expected results or is associated with burdensome side effects. In such situations, acupuncture is increasingly considered a safe and effective method to support treatment.

What does the research say?

In recent years, numerous clinical trials have been conducted in China, Europe, and the USA, comparing the effectiveness of acupuncture with pharmacotherapy in the treatment of depression.

  • A meta-analysis published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2019) covering 29 clinical trials with over 2,000 patients demonstrated that acupuncture, used either on its own or in combination with medication, significantly reduces depressive symptoms compared to pharmacotherapy alone.
  • A clinical trial in the Journal of Affective Disorders (2013) showed that in patients treated with acupuncture, mood improvement was comparable to the effects of fluoxetine (a popular antidepressant), while patients reported fewer side effects.
  • A Cochrane Systematic Review (2018) highlights that although further large-scale studies are needed, existing results suggest that acupuncture is effective in reducing symptoms of depression and improving patients’ quality of life.

How does acupuncture work for depression?

While the mechanisms of its action are not yet fully understood, scientific research indicates that:

  • Stimulation of acupuncture points affects the nervous system, increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine – neurotransmitters responsible for a positive mood.
  • It lowers cortisol levels (the primary stress hormone).
  • It improves sleep quality, which inherently helps reduce the severity of depressive symptoms.
  • The body activates self-regulation mechanisms, promoting emotional balance.

Why consider acupuncture?

  • It is a safe, well-tolerated method, free from the typical side effects associated with medication.
  • It can be used as a standalone therapy for mild depression or as a supportive measure alongside pharmacotherapy in more severe cases.
  • In our practice, acupuncture is always linked with specialized psychological support to ensure patients receive a truly comprehensive, holistic approach.

Summary

Acupuncture is no longer viewed just as a traditional method for pain relief – a growing body of research shows it can be a powerful tool in managing depression. By acting on the nervous system, it improves mood, reduces stress, and supports the body’s natural balance. When combined with psychotherapy and, where necessary, conventional pharmacology, it gives patients a stronger foundation for recovery.
